Sugar Moon Farm | Earltown, N.S

I am that stereotypical Canadian who loves anything maple flavoured. Cookies, fudge, syrup, donuts...if it's maple: get in my belly.

When Craig suggested we visit a maple sugar farm my obvious answer was a big fat yes!

On the farm you can do a variety of things: hike the many trails surrounding the farm, eat a delicious maple brunch, give snowshoeing a go, take the maple sugar tour and even try sugar on snow.

We booked ourselves in for the three o'clock tour and had a little time beforehand so we decided to try the sugar on snow and then rented some snowshoes. I was super excited because I've always wanted to try snowshoeing!

We got to roll our own snow around the maple sugar! It looks kind of weird but it was soo good!

We didn't have much time to try snowshoeing but we managed to go for a little walk.

When it was time for the tour I have to say I was a teeny bit disappointed. While I greatly enjoyed learning how the farm gets/makes the maple sugar I was hoping we'd actually go on a tour of the farmland and see the trees in action but the whole tour was held inside two small rooms. One room showed what the trees looked like while having the taps on them and the other room showed us the huge boiler where the maple is boiled down.

Of course we couldn't leave without buying some maply-goodness.We bought a small jar of maple butter (I have no words to describe this but AH-mazing will have to do) and some little maple leaf shaped maple sugar. Also delish.

We had such a wonderful day at the farm. I tried snowshoeing, got my maple fix and learned something interesting. I think we'll definitely go back again some day.

Do you like maple?

I'm Back Blog

So I almost gave up..

I almost threw in the towel and stopped blogging.

As you can see I've only posted twice this whole month (three times now including this one) and honestly, I didn't care one bit. I had no feelings whatsoever regarding this blog- good or bad. You see this past month and half hasn't been good to me at all. My anxiety reared it's ugly head once again and it grew to such a level I was afraid I wouldn't come back.

Around eight and a half months Lux stopped sleeping through the night again. Now when you first have a child you're aware they don't sleep through the night for the first few months and, while exhausting, you kind of just accept it and power through. Once the 3 to 4 month mark hits and your child finally stays asleep throughout the entire night you feel like you're in heaven. Unfortunately, there's a thing called the 8 to 10 month sleep regression that some children go through which causes them to wake multiple times throughout the night and in turn, you're up multiple times throughout the night. This usually happens because around this age your child is developing so quickly and they're learning so many new things it's kind of like their brains are wired. They don't quite know what to do with all of this new information and abilities. Throw teething on top of this and honestly, it can be a nightmare.

So because Lux wouldn't sleep through the night I was subjected to sleeping on the couch with her OR bringing her into our bed or else she'd scream all night. I'm thinking the contorted sleeping arrangements caused my costochondritis to act up and I started feeling a lot of pain on my left side. Seeing as my anxiety was already quite high by this time the added stress of feeling pain everyday caused my health anxiety to skyrocket. Most of my issues with anxiety is that when I feel pain or discomfort of any kind my mind automatically thinks the worst and I start obsessing over it and I'm convinced I'm going to die. I totally had myself convinced I had breast cancer so I went to the doctor. He said everything seemed alright and that there is never really an explanation as to why we feel tender/uncomfortable in our sides or ribs. I was a little relieved but still in pain so not totally comforted by that visit. I'm doing my best to let it go though and not obsess over my left side. I'm starting to feel a little better about it but not 100% yet. If the discomfort is still there a few weeks from now I'll be going to another doctor.

With my mind a mess with worry over my health Lux had a terrible burn accident. (I wrote about it here) So there was more stress.

I guess with this big ramble I wanted to say that I've been extremely stressed out and anxious lately and haven't felt like myself at all. But I'm slowly trying to sort my life out.

I'm trying to eat better and exercise. I've even taken dairy back out of my diet.
I'm trying to get back to feeling good.

This blog always made me feel good. So I'm not ready to give up on it yet.

I'm hoping to get back into regular posting again soon and I wanted to say thank you to any of you who stuck with me and continued to check out my blog even when there wasn't a whole lot going on with it :)

On Sunday March 12th, around 5pm, my precious baby received second degree burns...

It's unsettling to realize how quickly your world can be turned upside down. How the people and places around you turn blurry with adrenaline pumping through your veins.

I'm going to start by saying Lux is okay. Obviously everything is not 100% fine but she's doing exceptionally well considering.

Sunday started with a fun day of shopping -family members were up visiting.
My aunt had just bought Lux a cute pink ride in push car as an early Easter present.

It was decided that after shopping we would meet at a restaurant.

We (Craig, Lux and myself) arrived first and went in to the restaurant and got our table. The waitress asked if we wanted a high chair or a booster seat. We said high chair.
After she brought the chair over I asked for a warm glass of water to make a bottle with. When she came back Craig and I were both trying to get Lux into the seat (why do babies hate putting their legs through the seat?) and the waitress proceeded to place the cup right in front of Lux. Lux loves cups so before we even had her fully fastened in the chair she reached out and grabbed the full glass of water and tipped it all over her legs.

When I looked down at her legs I could see steam rising and Lux started screaming. I grabbed her from the seat and ripped her pants off as fast as I could. They burned within seconds. The skin on her poor little legs were just peeling off.

It wasn't warm water at all. It was scalding hot. The waitress got the water from the tea machine.

We wrapped Lux in my coat and placed her in the car and rushed to the hospital.

She received second degree burns all over her right leg (one small spot was third degree) and a few spots on her left leg. She was on morphine for three days but now it's just tylenol and advil.

They expect her to recover well. Hopefully with no, or very little, scarring.

But she is SO strong. She's still her happy little self and has only been crying while the doctors change her dressing. I think mama has been crying more than she has.

Her dressing keeps slipping so we have to go in again today to secure it better but other than that we don't have to go back until Tuesday to open up the dressing and assess the burns again.

I'm so proud of her right now for being so strong. I'll update sometime next week.

9 Months Old

Nine months already. I know I say it every month but where is the time going!? Everyday when I look at her I just can't believe how big she's getting. Where did my teensy little baby go!?

♥ O N  T H E  M O V E !
She is just crawling ALL over the place now! It seemed like one day we were trying to show her how to move her legs to crawl and the next day she was going! She's a speedy little thing.

♥ P U L L I N G  H E R S E L F  U P
Since she figured out how to crawl why not start pulling herself up onto e v e r y t h i n g!? She grabs a hold of anything (toys, couch, tv stand, etc) and stands herself up.

her first valentine's day!

♥ S H E  C A N  W A V E
Watching her wave hello or bye bye is the cutest thing ever! It's a funny looking wave but super adorable :)

♥ T U R N I N G  T H E  L I G H T S  O F F
Okay, so we've been practising this one since she was like four months old but this month she has perfected it!- turning the light switch off! Whenever we leave a room I just say to her "Lux can you get the light please" and she'll turn and flick it off. It's awesome.

♥ S A Y S  S H  S H  S H
Since she was born one of the things we've always done to soothe her was to make the "shhh shhh shhh" sound. It seems she has picked up on that and will occasionally start shushing people.

♥ D A N C I N G  Q U E E N
Every single time she hears music now she starts dancing! It's too cute. Sometimes if you're holding her the little foot just starts groovin to the music. I love it!

This was a big month for her! Other things to note: had her first valentine's day, attended her first birthday party and unfortunately seems to be in the middle of the 8-10 month sleep regression- but we're working on it! I can't wait to see what this month brings :)
